Kybella FAQ
What is KYBELLA®?
KYBELLA® (deoxycholic acid) injection is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment that is used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called, “double chin.”
How Does KYBELLA® Work?
The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat.
When injected into the fat beneath your chin, KYBELLA® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.
When Will I see Results?
The fat is dissolved within 10-15 minutes of injection, however an inflammatory response is induced that causes swelling and takes a 3-4 weeks to subside. You will not see your final result for approximately 1-3 months following your injection.
How Many Treatments Will I need?
You and your aesthetic provider will customize your KYBELLA® treatment regimen, including how many treatments you need, based on your desired chin profile. Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatment sessions. During these sessions, your HCP will administer KYBELLA® into the fat under your chin using multiple injections. Up to 6 treatment sessions may be administered spaced no less than one month apart.
How Long do the Results last?
When injected into the fat under your chin, KYBELLA® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After the aesthetic response is achieved, retreatment with KYBELLA® is not expected.
How Long does the treatment take to do
As an injectable treatment, similar to Botox and fillers, it requires a relatively short office visit that should take less than 30 minutes.
Is there any downtime?
There can be some bruising associated with KYBELLA® treatments, similar to other injectables, that can last up to a week. You are free to apply concealer to cover bruises the very next day. The swelling lasts typically 1-4 weeks, and full result is visible in about 3 months.
Is it Safe?
Because the active ingredient in KYBELLA® occurs naturally in the human body, severe reactions to this nonsurgical facial rejuvenation treatment are uncommon. However, there are some risks such as swelling, bruising, and hardness that may accompany any injectable medication.
What other options are available for "Double-Chin"?
Surgical options such as liposuction, facelift and/or neck lift are still excellent options and in many patients give a superior result. If a patient has excess skin under the chin, surgical excision is often needed. Other available non-surgical options include Coolsculpting.
